The Necks Live at Byron Theatre | Legendary Australian Cult Band
Following sold-out shows in 2024 and 2025, The Byron Theatre is delighted to welcome The Necks back to Byron. Critics often call The Necks one of the great cult bands of Australia and the world. Their performances feature lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in a mesmerising fashion. An insistent deep groove frequently underpins these pieces. With eighteen albums in their discography, their music stands up to re-listening time and time again.
The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Listeners often find it difficult to categorize their specific sound. The music is not entirely avant-garde. It is also not strictly minimalist, ambient, or jazz. Instead, the band remains totally unique in the world today.
The trio are masters of their own musical language of long-form improvisation. Each night, they step onto the stage with no pre-conceived ideas of what they will play. Both the band and the audience go on a sonic journey created entirely in the moment. This shared experience depends heavily on the energy of the room.
Over their 30 years together, they have honed an assured process of building sound. The band builds around repeated motifs through subtle shifts and layering. This technique produces an extraordinarily dense and hypnotic effect. The music builds in an epic fashion, resembling an orchestral expanse.
Every performance by The Necks Byron Theatre is a singular event. The show consists of two sets. Each set lasts approximately 45 minutes. Because the music is entirely improvised, the trio works closely with the acoustics of the room.
Key highlights of the performance:
-
Witness a world-renowned cult band live in an intimate venue.
-
Experience 100% improvised music that never repeats.
-
Enjoy a dense, hypnotic soundscape built over two 45-minute sets.
